IMAGINE TREASURE AWAITS YOU
It's all about attitude.
If you can't imagine a treasure being there, then you are unlikely to find it!
IMAGINE TREASURE IS AWAITING DISCOVERY
You have to believe in it!
If you can't imagine a treasure awaiting discovery, then you are unlikely to begin the search and so you will never find it.
Some people say "In Western Australia there is no wreck older than 1622 and there is no Pirate Treasure to be found".
They might be right, but where is the fun in that attitude?
I like to imagine there is plenty of treasure, but not yet found.

TREASURE AWAITS THE FINDER
Enjoy the journey and not just the destination!
I IMAGINED FINDING RUBIES!
THEY SAID THERE WERE NO RUBIES
I FOUND RUBIES Rex Woodmore
When I became interested in prospecting for rubies they said there are no Rubies in Western Australia.
When I imagined I could prospect and find the corundum gems (Sapphire & Ruby) in Western Australia, Geologists & other experts said it could not be done.
"Western Australia’s geology is different from the Eastern states where sapphires & rubies are found". |
But against their predictions, I proved my theory and it was then realised by the experts that the Geology in my prospecting area was similar to the Sri Lankan gem fields, that produce some of the finest pastel pink sapphires & rubies, similar to the colours of the near gem quality crystal fragments that I was finding and my Geology lecturer became my business partner, in a Joint Venture with a Mining company.
|
Through a joint venture with a mining exploration company, I did gain financially from my ruby project, however due to a stock market crash and legal complications with the location of the mineral claim on private property, in use as farming land over a large area with multiple owners, it was not mined.
|
But it doesn't really matter, because it was a wonderful journey, I proved my point and I now have confidence in my imaginings.
Many years ago an American company found a few tiny rubies near Southern Cross and they attached them to microscope slides and sold them for educational purposes.
TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE!
If you see a coin on the ground, don't pass it bye.
Pick it up and hava a good look at it!
But now there are several Australian 5 cent coins worth big money ! Recently a coin collector received a 5c coin in his change from a coffee shop. He checked it and found that it was a very rare 2007 five cent error coin with double heads worth $2000. It is one of 700 known to have slipped through the Royal mint’s quality control system and into general circulation.
THERE'S NOTHING 'CHEAP' ABOUT THE CHEAPSIDE HOARD
"Imagine everything you find is a treasure"
(So the demolition workers were told)
In 1912 workmen were demolishing a row of three houses in the commercial district of Cheapside, near St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. While cleaning out the debris in a gloomy brick-lined cellar, they found a large rotting wooden box. When they lifted the crumbing, worm eaten lid a treasure of sixteenth and seventeenth century gems and jewelry spilled out onto the muddy chalk floor.
Immediately they stuffed as much as they could into their pockets to take to “Stony Jack,” as they called him. 'Stony' was a dealer in antiquities who had told the workers that they should imagine that everything they find was a potential treasure - "Every scrap of metal, pottery, glass, or leather that has been lying under London is of value to an archaeologist" he said.
NEVER COULD HE HAVE IMAGINED
...that his $2000 car would one day be worth $38 Million!
In 1965 there wasn't much demand for used racing cars and so young Fabrizio Violati paid less than $2000 for an ageing Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta. He once said "I saved the car from scrap and hid it from my parents. I only drove it at night so nobody would see me."
He used the classic car for about 40 years at historic racing events. In the 2000s it was in a private collection. Violati passed away in 2010.
The car went to an auction in Carmel, California, which overflowed with bidders and a crowd of onlookers spilled out onto the lawns where they followed the auction live on several big TV screens. They say that the bidding war at times resembled the to and fro of a tennis match, with moments of quiet broken by cheers. Finally the crowd erupted in applause when the gavel fell and it fetched $38,115,000 and became the most valuable car in history to be sold at auction.

PORCELAIN DISH WITH VOC EMBLEM
I imagine it was from a VOC treasure ship!
I have searched for ages online and cannot find one with an identical pattern. Which might show it to be something quite special, perhaps a 'one of a kind' made for a high ranking members of the VOC or perhaps a ship’s Captain, like the one in my story.
On the coast of Western Australia, we have several known Dutch (VOC) treasure ships, one of which, the Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon, I have dived on a couple of times) There are many mysteries surrounding the wreck and its survivors.
Recently I was privileged to be shown an interesting addition to the private antique collection of a well respected Western Australian antique dealer (the father of a friend of mine). They were not wrong in thinking that I might be interested in a recent acquisition, a genuine VOC artifact, a porcelain bowl that is quite different from anything else that I can find online. It is an original (not a replica) more ornate and bigger than most. I believe it is called a 'charger' rather than a bowl. It seems that it was purchased under mysterious circumstances (or is that my over active imagination). All they would tell me was that it was recently purchased from a guy living in a Caravan Park near Geraldton, WA. It has a couple of holes manufactured in its raised base, which I thought was for displaying on the wall, but I have since seen images of a similar one on a wooden stand which makes me think that in the 17th century it was used as a wash basin (Perhaps in a ship Captain’s cabin). |
My imagination goes wild and I see the dish on its stand, being used as a wash bowl by the captain of one of the VOC treasure ships off the coast of Western Australia. The most likely one would be Captain Pieter Albertsz on the Gilt Dragon.
When the ship hit the reef and stuck there with king waves crashing over her and taking on water, there was little time to go below to save the cargo of trade goods (ivory tusks and eight chests of silver with a value of 78,6000 guilders) which were below decks and underwater in no time at all. But the Captain’s cabin, was at the same level as the lifeboats so when the crew grabbed whatever might be usefull, most of it came from the boat deck and the Captain's cabin alongside the boat deck.
How the bowl survived for 350 years, is anyone’s guess. If my imagined story was true then perhaps the survivors of the Gilt Dragon went off to live with friendly Aboriginals and rather than carry the bowl (perhaps greatly treasured by the ship's captain, but a relatively useless and cumbersome object in the bush) they stashed it away in the sand, somewhere near where children found buried coins at the mouth of the Moore River (possibly from a Gilt dragon survivor) and perhaps someone years later found it and kept quiet about it for many years.
THEY SAID 'NO DIAMONDS IN AUSTRALIA'
BUT THEY FOUND DIAMONDS
2021 UPDATE! THE ARGYLE DIAMOND MINE IS NOW CLOSED!
There is plenty of treasure to be found in Western Australia,
if you get up to the Kimberley, the whole place is a beautiful natural treasure and there is natural buried treasure there too, especially gems. For 12 months I worked at the Argyle Diamond mine that produces pink diamonds. It is a massive project set in magnificent surrounds. |
IF YOU DON'T LOOK FOR IT
YOU WON'T FIND IT!

THEY SAID THERE WAS NO GOD
But I found God Rex Woodmore
When I almost drowned and had a shark sniffing at my legs while diving on the wreck of the treasure ship 'Gilt Dragon'
I called out to the God that I thought I did not believe in. People do that all the time. When they need Him they have a natural urge to pray or shout out to Him!

The next wave behaved differently to the preceding five.
The last wave gently rolled me over the reef into calmer waters.
A Bronze Whaler shark was ‘sniffing’ at my scratched and bleeding legs.
